French Quarter Fest, Friday, April 11

The web page says 11:00 - 12:45 p.m. Rumba Buena
12:50 NY time, there are still in the studio. They will go live at 2
NY time. OK.

1:00 - 2:45 p.m. Ricardo Crespo and Sol Brasil
I tune in at 2 NY time. They are playing some cajun CDs.

Idiot DJ (Willy Jenkins) mispronounces Bruce Daigrepont as Bruce
Daigreport. No announcement as to why we are listening to CDs and not
the Fest...
2:25 NY time: DJ says they are awaiting their signal momentarily.

They go live at 2:30 NY time.

This group, Ricardo Crespo and Sol Brasil, could be interesting.
Brazilian folk... (Good mix! Wow, how rare!)

Bass comes in and totally distorts but it's fixed quickly. We can't
hear the crowd at all but I am impressed that the rest of the mix is
good. Usually somebody is out of the mix altogether.

Bandleader says hello to family back in Brasil.

Band is ok but not that interesting to me.

Some Brazilian accordion music, well alright. 8-bass accordion. Can
barely hear it... Does the sound engineer know it is there? I doubt
it. We're not going to get to hear it, sorry... Can hear everything
else just fine but no accordion. Vocal is way down in the mix too.
Violin too loud.

~3 pm NY time. DJ butts in. We lose stage as he talks. DJ butts in
again! (Jets fly over)

cha cha cha...

reggae from south brasil... boring. violin isn't exactly on key all
the time. gets better after awhile.

DJ butts in. At least he's brief and they do this when the band is
between tunes.

Monitor ring... sound crew is oblivious. It's the guitar in the monitor...

Conga comes into the mix real loud. (maybe they think this steady
tone is intentional?)

Congas are TOO LOUD!

No need to record this so I stop.

Congas are still too loud. Monitor ring has lessened but comes back
occasionally.

I guess the engineer isn't paying attention...

Intros band. we hear slight applause (from stage?)

Summer Rain.

Yawn. Keith Hill w/ David Kunian then it seems to go dead.

nicer tune follows.

DJs could use windscreens...

Proud to crawl home!

OK. It's almost 4:30 NY time. When are we going to hear the next band?

Good. They go now. (3:15 - 5:00 p.m. Lafourche Cajun Band) The band
is in progress. Overmodulating but gets better. Oh madeleine...
Lafourche. It means the fart? The fort?

Valse de Bayou Teche.

Jimmy C Newman's Lache Pas la Patate! Pauline used to crack up
listening to this. I'm surprised this is such a revered song...

Not a great band...

Belizaire The Cajun, the best movie about cajuns, they say.

This guy can't sing. Valse de Belizaire.

...

Joe LeBlon... Jole Blond sings WAY off key! Painful. I think I'll go
for a walk.

I come back for the Pinegrove Blues. Band sounds better. They still
can't sing though... Awful.

My Baby Don't Wear No Drawers. This singer at least can sing.

"You are entuned to WWOZ." Stupid. Entuned is not a word.

Jambalaya.

The Back Door... La Porte en Arriere

The cajun joke makes me laugh.

This guy can't sing...

Keep Your Hands Off It... vocal is out of the mix in the beginning.

Where cajun men learn to make love, in the chicken coop. This guy
can't sing. Thankfully he is also off-mic.

Dark eyes... Les Petit Yeux Noirs. Good repertoire. Lousy band.

(Les Haricorts) Zydeco Sont Pas Sale/Don't Mess With My Toot Toot

The Love Bridge Waltz

I watch the news but will come back to this after that.

I tape it all and am now am listening to the tape. I skip all that
talk and start where I think they are playing a Balfa Toujours
CD/tape. It sounds dull (no high end) and is low level but is great
musically.

Bruce Daigrepont

The DJ asks, has he started, yes he has and they go to him. Would
they have gone to him if he hadn't asked? The band is playing a
familiar tune. Very hot band. Level is low, no high end though.

They go right into another tune, a slower tune. Play from your heart he says.

Bruce thanks OZ but his mic is down.

My True Love (takes us to Texas).

...

corny bass sound....

In the middle of the song for the Danish couple, the level goes up.

another familiar instrumental.

3 minutes before 6, NO time. we hear the train whistle. Ah nostalgia.
A sweet tune. I didn't get the name of it... Not a prisoner of work.
DJ sounds like he is far away, tinny and fades in and out.

Madame Justine? Sostene? Jose? Another familiar tune. He plays so
many that I love.

Madame Rosin. Love this guy.

A fast one.

DJ interrupted before this. Yakked away and made us miss the song
intro. Why do they do this? When the band is about to play SHUT UP!
You don't have to ID between every GD tune.

Canray Fontenont's Prison Bar Blues. This DJ, Charles Laborde, knows
his stuff but I wish he didn't cut short the music.

Oh good, I can re-EQ the bass and it sounds better/cures that lousy
bass sound. (cut 150k 10 db)

Will Balfa Two Step. Great stuff!

Morrisville Two Step? Accordion is a little low in the mix. You gotta
wonder about the engineers when the leader's instrument is low in the
mix...

Le Bon Temps Roulez waltz.

nice next tune... earlier stuff had me dancing.... level is better
now. I'm not missing the high end as much. Now the level goes down.
What is up with that? Low level now. I'm listening via the iTunes
link.

His last tune, The Devil Is Loose, he gets psychedelic!

They sign off in the middle of Bruce's last song. Boo. 8:05 NY time.
Why not bail right before 8 instead of in the middle of a song after
8? (7 NO time)
